Primary Closet: Phase 1 – Flooring & Lighting

The primary closet is a decent size, but whoever designed the layout has never actually used a closet before. The chief complaint is the door swings inward and blocks a third of my side, rendering it useless without the door closed. It definitely calls for a pocket door, but that’s an issue for a different day.

The closet has never been a super organized place in our home. That was fine until the fluorescent light also went out and not only was it disorganized, but also dark. So dark that we had to turn on the phone flashlight to pick out clothes each day. Our first baby, a miniature schnauzer named Diesel, had also decided that the inaccessible corner would be a fantastic place to dig and pull up the corner of the carpet.

I’m no stranger to changing out light fixtures, but never have I switched a fluorescent to a canned light. Nor have I attempted to change out flooring, though it is something I’d like to try. Normally, I would attend a few classes at YouTube University and figure all these things out and do them myself, but 3 positive pregnancy tests put us on a time crunch.

It is wild to me that these are the unedited before pictures. It is so dark! The carpet has certainly seen better days, too. In true Ashley fashion, I was too excited to tear down shelves before I remembered to take photos – oops!

Due to the aforementioned time crunch, and my lack of experience in these changes, this job was hired out. Our handyman switched out the light fixture and replaced the flooring in less than a day – money well spent!

These photos are unedited – the difference in the amount of light in this space is unreal. I am so glad we switched to LED canned lights for a number of reasons, but the amount of light vs the fluorescent is top of the list. Flooring was purchased from Floor & Decor and used 3 boxes. It has a matte finish and the color closely matches the rest of the house. It is much easier to keep clean and Diesel can’t dig in it – win win!

Usually at the end of my posts on home projects, I include what will change in the future and what I learned through the project. This project was very straightforward and there’s not much more to say. The one takeaway that wasn’t so much a new lesson, but one that was reinforced through this project is choosing when to hire out vs DIY. I absolutely could have made these changes on my own, but it would have taken me weeks when it took the professionals hours.
