Everyone who lives…anywhere…should have a basic toolbox or toolkit, whether you own your home or are renting. When my parents dropped me off at my first college dorm, they equipped me with a basic toolkit and I used it way more than I expected!
Most hardware stores will have a basic toolkit that contain most or all of the items below, but these are ones that I have personally used the most. This would make for a great gift for a new college student or someone living on their own for the first time.
- Hammer
- Tape measure
- Screwdriver set – various head types and sizes
- Locking pliers
- Needle nose pliers
- Painters tool
- Socket wrench set
- Utility knife
- Level
- Scissors
- Allen wrench / Hex key set
The tools above are necessary for basic tasks like hanging pictures, changing out batteries, and anything that requires “some assembly”. Having them on-hand will make for one less trip to the store!
